PODIUM OF THE ROOKIES FOR ALBERTO CERQUI AT VARANO

29/08/2010 - Alberto Cerqui obtained further points for the rookies classification at Varano de' Melegari in the fifth round of the Italian Formula 3 Championship.

The driver from Brescia, winner last year of the Formula Azzurra title, in the second free practice session got into the absolute top-ten with the tenth fastest time (1'03.844). Some more difficulties in qualifying, ended with the fourteenth time (1'03.322) in a session characterized by minimal gaps.

In race one, Cerqui, penalyzed by four positions on the starting grid due to a racing episode at Mugello, ended seventeenth, fifth among the rookies.

Regular start in race two, which saw him finishing thirteenth under the chequered flag, which was worth the third place on the rookies podium.

In the rookies classification, Cerqui is now fifth with 66 points. The leader Kevin Giovesi (JD Motorsport) is standing at 137, followed by Gabriel Chaves (Eurointernational) at 132 and by Gianmarco Raimondo (Lucidi Motors) at 82.

Alberto Cerqui:
"This is a very fought championship and in a short circuit like Varano the values on the field tend to get even closer. Qualifying was certainly crucial due to the very few overtaking points offered by the track: at the end of the session seven drivers were within just three tenths, from the eighth, pole-man for race two, up to my position. This is a time gap relatively short that determined the outcome of the weekend anyway: I knew that starting from the back it would have been difficult to get in the top ten and things went this way. I obtained some useful points for the rookies classification where I aspire to finish the season within the top three".

The Italian Formula 3 Championship will be back on track next 26 September at Vallelunga.
