VALENCIA: ALBERTO CERQUI CONFIRMED TO BE COMPETITIVE IN THE SECOND ROUND OF THE SUPERSTARS SERIES

08/05/2011 - Alberto Cerqui centered his target of finishing within points in Valencia (Spain), theatre of the second round of the Superstars Series, valid for the International series only.

Qualifying were held on Saturday on wet track and turned out to be not so lucky for the young Italian driver, who obtained the fourteenth fastest time (2'00.624) at the debut on the track in a session strongly conditioned by changing grip conditions.
In race one Cerqui pushed with determination and recovered, thanks to a thrilling series of overtaking, up to the eighth position. Halfway through the race a contact with the Mercedes driven by Riccardo Romagnoli was sanctioned by stewards with a drive-through penalty that compromised the final outcome of the race with Alberto crossing the finish line in twelfth position.

Characterful performance also in race two when Cerqui recovered several positions and seemed to be able of aiming at the top five. A contact with Fabrizio Armetta (Chevrolet) was investigated by stewards again who subsequently decided to give another drive-through penalty to the number 3 BMW M3. Despite of this, Cerqui managed to finish tenth obtaining a point for the classification.

Alberto Cerqui:
"The heavy rain fallen on the circuit during qualifying played a crucial role: in free practice I was constantly in the top five but I never lapped before with BMW M3 in wet conditions therefore I paid a bit of un-experience in a difficult condition.
Probably with a dry qualifying the weekend would have gone differently but I am satisfied for having a good race pace".

In the classification of the International Series Cerqui is currently eighth at 17 points. The next round of the championship is scheduled for 22 May in Portimao (Portugal).
