RAIN STRIPPED ALBERTO CERQUI OF A DESERVED PODIUM IN IMOLA'S RACE TWO

30/05//2016 - Alberto Cerqui was again close to the podium in the difficult final of Imola's second round of the Italian GT 2016 Championship.

The BMW Team Italia's driver, at the wheel of the BMW M6 GT3 alongside co-equiper Stefano Comandini, had a troubled weekend after the fourth place in Monza's debut: an engine problem in free practice forced the lineup to miss the second practice session, qualifying and race one. The new engine arrived during the weekend and the team worked around the clock to prepare the BMW M6 GT3 ahead of race two.

Weather conditions were very difficult in the second race of the weekend and heavy rains flooded the track also limiting visibility.

Following the start from the last spot of the grid, a great stint by his team mate, handed Cerqui the BMW M6 GT3 in tenth position. The driver from Brescia found a good feeling with the car on the wet straight away and put in a series of quick laps allowing him to climb all the way back to P2. Track conditions forced race direction to stop the race at lap 11 and Cerqui eventually classified fifth.

Alberto Cerqui:
"I must thank my team for the fantastic job they have done to get us on track for race two. They worked all night long to install the new engine unit and this allowed us to make it to the track. The red flagging of race two did not allow us to get what deserved on track, but we run a great race despite the impossible track conditions due to the heavy rain. The missed podium highlights our potential though, I believe we will have the chance to play our cards on track in Misano".

The Italian GT Championship will resume from the Misano World Circuit next 10 -12 June with the third round of the season.
