25/09/2016 - Alberto Cerqui's weekend at the circuit Enzo e Dino Ferrari of Imola, penultimate act of the Italian GT Championship 2016, ended with the third podium of the season.

The Italian works driver of BMW Team Italia run a flawless weekend that was rewarded with the third place in race two, result obtained at the end of a great performance. Cerqui managed the potential of the BMW M6 GT3 on a tricky track where the finest sensibility is required to take the car to its limit. He did so using all his experience and determination.

After the eighth time set by co-equiper Stefano Comandini in the first free practice session on Friday, Cerqui improved his time with P4 in the second session. Comandini closed qualifying with the ninth time of Q1, while Cerqui secured the fourth row in Q2 posting a 1'41.485 that was less than a second slower than the pole position.

Comandini started race one and drove the BMW M6 GT3 without making mistakes, allowing Cerqui to get the wheel of the car in a good moment. The Italian driver managed to get four places back closing in fifth absolute place.

Race two took place on Sunday morning as Cerqui was motivated to get a strong result. Thanks to an effective driving, the Italian driver managed to recover up to P3 getting the most of pit stops. The pairing kept their position fending off Venturi-Gai (Ferrari 488) in the closing stages, as the chequered flag awarded Cerqui with the third podium of the season after the victory in Misano and the second place in Mugello.

Alberto Cerqui:
"Taking the podium here in Imola is really exciting and rewards the hard work done. We thought we could be closer to the top, but in qualifying we struggled a bit to find the speed, perhaps because we lacked a little bit of traction out of slow corners. Getting back on the podium feels great, I have to thank all my fans that pushed me to run a good weekend. This is a really challenging championship, the level is very high and this result is what we needed to head to the final round of Mugello with the right optimism".

The Italian GT Championship will resume from Mugello next 14-16 October for the closing round of the season.
