ALBERTO CERQUI AWARDS THE BMW M6 WITH ITS FIRST WIN IN THE ITALIAN GT CHAMPIONSHIP |
|
13/06/2016 - Alberto Cerqui had a very positive weekend at the circuit of Misano. BMW Team Italia's driver led in fact the BMW M6 GT3 to an extraordinary first win in the Italian GT 2016 Championship.
After the unlucky weekend of Imola, the driver from Brescia was very motivated to counter-charge in the round of Misano. In free practice, Cerqui has been in the top part of the classification looking for the best setup to adapt his BMW M6 GT3 to the circuit. He then put in stunning 1'32.838s in Q1, which was the quickest lap of the whole weekend. Cerqui has obtained in this way a deserved pole position, relegating the second to more than 2 tenths behind.
Race one was run in dry conditions and the BMW Team Italia's driver drove wisely through a tight first stint, saving tyres and car before handing it over to Comandini in fourth position. The lineup rejoined after the pitstop in second place and a streak of very competitive laps placed them in the fight for the victory. The BMW M6 GT3 took the lead a few laps before the end of the race, closing a stunning performance with the top step of the podium earning the lineup the first win of the season.
Race two has been more difficult, as weather conditions changed completely. On the wet tarmac and with heavy rain falling Cerqui led a wise race in mid field, ending close to the points in twelfth position.
Alberto Cerqui:
"I am extremely satisfied. After the unlucky races in Monza and Imola we finally showed our real potential with a bold performance. The car has been perfect in qualifying, we had a great setup and I felt at ease behind the wheel. The same great feeling was confirmed in the race and I gave my best. I would like to thank also Stefano Comandini who has also put in a great drive. Weather ruined a bit our plan for race two, but the weekend has been certainly positive. This is the right confidence boost we need for the next rounds of the season".
The Italian GT Championship will resume next 15-17 July for the first round of in Mugello. |
