NEW WORLD POINTS IN SALZBURG |
|
20/05/2012 - The weekend of Salzburg, theater of the sixth round of the FIA WTCC 2012, awarded Alberto Cerqui with further world points that highlight the ever more interesting growth of the talent from Brescia.
On Saturday the Italian Superstars Series reigning champion set the fourteenth time in Q1 (1'28.424), getting once more close to Q2 that seemed at his reach until the final stages.
Alberto Cerqui's race one did not start in the best possible way, as the Italian driver was forced to the pits at the end of lap one due to a contact with a rival that damaged the left front tyre of his BMW 320TC. Back on track in last position, Cerqui started a lively recover taking him, thanks also to a safety car deployment, to the thirteenth final place, that meant sixth and points in the Yokohama Drivers' Trophy.
Wise race two instead: after a good start, Cerqui moved up into twelfth and, thanks to a flawless performance, he afterwards progressively gained the place of other drivers victim of Salzburgring's pitfalls. The seventh place under the chequered flag gave him further points for the absolute classification and four more points in the Yokohama Drivers' Trophy, where he ended fifteenth.
Alberto Cerqui:
"The outcome of my race one was decided by the initial contact with a Ford driver; in race two I started well instead and I had the chance to get some more positions at the first chicane, but I decided not to risk the contact with the Chevrolets as it would have been impossible to keep them behind anyway. In the final stages my pace was not far from that of the front-runners and in fact my best lap was the fourth absolute; at the moment my problem is this: not knowing the racetracks I get to express my best only in race two when it is obviously too late. Fortunately this is just a matter of experience, therefore the team and I work with the highest possible serenity as we are aware that results will arrive".
In the classification of the Yokohama Drivers' Trophy, Cerqui is currently seventh at 34 points, just 16 short of the fourth place. The FIA WTCC will be back on track next 3 June in Portimao (P). |
