11/03/2012 - Debut with points for Alberto Cerqui in Monza's opening round of the FIA WTCC (World Touring Car Championship) thanks to a solid performance that allowed him to finish the two races in tenth and ninth place, taking his BMW 320TC to the top ten.

The driver from Brescia, despite not running very many kilometers on the German car during winter, showed potential to be among protagonists since the beginning in qualifying held Saturday. In the initial stages of Q1, Q2 seemed to be at reach but an excursion at the parabolica with just a few minutes to the end of the session put the word end to his action forcing him to start both races from the seventeenth place of the grid.

Cerqui fought strongly since the first lap of race one climbing rapidly all the way up to the ninth place. The race lived a series of duels in which the Italian champion gained and lost positions until the finish line that was crossed in tenth place. This was worth the fourth place in the Yokohama Trophy and the first world point of his career.

Race two began with the standing start and the champion from Brescia managed to get a stunning getaway allowing him to gain five positions straight away. Eleventh at lap two, Cerqui kept on recovering places reaching P10 at lap five that became ninth place during the last lap; he also finished fifth in the Yokohama Trophy.

Cerqui is currently twelfth in the standings with 3 points, while in the Yokohama Trophy he is sixth at nine points. The FIA WTCC will be back on track next 1 April in Valencia (Spain).

Alberto Cerqui:
"This was a positive weekend but the result of both races was spoiled by qualifying. My race pace has constantly been on good levels and honestly I did not expect to be so competitive since the beginning; the potential is undoubtedly interesting and as the feeling with the car improves I will managed to get some more tenths off my laptimes. I am hopeful on getting important results especially in the Yokohama Trophy".
